Dr Martin William Schoppmeyer's Obituary
Dr. Martin William Schoppmeyer, Sr. 79 of Fayetteville, AR passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Fayetteville. He was born September 15, 1929 in Weehawen, N.J. to William George and Madeleine M. Haas Schoppmeyer. He graduated from Fordham University in 1950 then served in the United States Army Signal Corps in the Korean War. Upon his return stateside, Martin earned a Masters of Education from the University of Florida in 1955 and taught for Florida public schools. Martin earned a Doctorate of Education from University of Florida in 1962. Martin was Dean of Continuing Education at Florida Atlantic University before joining the University of Arkansas College of Education faculty in 1968. He retired from UA in 1999 as University Professor.Public education was at the forefront of Martin's professional career. He was a popular professor and mentor to countless teachers and school administrators in the state of Arkansas. Martin assisted Little Rock with the integration of its faculty. He was appointed by President Richard M. Nixon to serve on the National Advisory on Education Professions Development.He spent a great deal of his career championing equity for Arkansas public school children, lending his assistance in the Alma versus Dupree and Lakeview cases.Martin was a member of St. Thomas and St. Joseph Catholic Churches in Fayetteville. He was longtime member of the Fayetteville Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn Myers Schoppmeyer, children Susan Schoppmeyer Bendure and husband Robert of Broken Arrow, Okla. and Martin W.Schoppmeyer Jr. and wife Carin of Fayetteville. His caregiver was Sarah Saleh.
Visitation will be held 5:00 PM Monday, February 2, 2009 in the Chapel of Nelson-Berna Funeral Home with a Rosary being recited beginning at 6:00 PM.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayetteville, AR. Private burial will be held at Fayetteville National Cemetery.
