Winston Ivan Sloan's Obituary
Winston Ivan Sloan, aged 89, passed away on July 6, 2025, in Fayetteville, AR. Born on September 2, 1935, in Jonesboro AR, he was raised in the farming community of Black Rock, AR.
As many have said, Winston was the sweetest, kindest, most understanding gentleman they ever knew. He was well mannered, honest and humble. He was also known by many names including “Tinker”, “W I”, “Sloan”, and “Winnie” but most notably Dad and Granddad.
After graduating from Black Rock High School, he attended the University of Arkansas and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1958. While at the U of A he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and he met his future wife, Alice Anne Bowman.
Upon graduating from the U of A, he served in the US Army at Fort Hood in Texas and then went into business with friend Charles Crockett at Crockett Menswear clothing store. He began his banking career as a teller with the old McIlroy Bank. After attending the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University, he worked his way up to Senior Vice-President & Trust Officer before retiring from the bank in 1987. Next, he worked with his good friend Dr. Bob Hall as they formed Hall-Sloan & Associates before he retired in 1992. Later he focused his obligations on his family and farming operations in Northeast Arkansas.
He was involved with the University of Arkansas for many years including as a Big Red member of the Razorback Foundation, the Century Club from 1978-79, a Life Member of the Arkansas Alumni Association, where he served on the board of directors from 1983-86 as well as many other civic and community organizations. His faith was very important to him, and he was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church and then University Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughter Anne Harrison and husband Mike of Fayetteville AR, son Walker Sloan and wife Julie of Little Rock AR, grand dog Bailey Sloan, and grandsons, Daniel, Bramel and Samual Harrison and great grandchildren David and Isabelle Harrison, Coen, Gentry, Jasper and Clive Harrison.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother James F. Sloan II and Snow Mountjoy Sloan, his brothers James F. Sloan III and Jack M. Sloan, and his loving wife of 62 years Alice Anne Bowman Sloan.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, July 11 at 1:00 pm at Moore's Chapel Funeral Home, 206 W Center St, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Followed by a reception at the Fayetteville Country Club where he was a member for many years and known by some as a "salty golfer."
