Charlie was my boss for 8 years (1976 to 1984) while I worked at Cargill Feed Division in Minnetonka. He was truly the "best of the best", as during my 44 years of employment, I had 27 bosses - and Charlie was one of a kind! In October of 2003, myself and my friend, Marge Lodden (Cargill employee for 40 years) visited Charlie and Mary Lou in Rogers at their lovely home. In 3 days, they showed us the town, taking us to dinner at the country club, boating at the lake on the pontoon, and a visit to Fayetteville to see the campus and stadium. They couldn't have made us feel more at home or more welcome, even though I hadn't seen them in almost 20 years!
Charlie was the guest commencement speaker in May 1979 (possibly for Scott's high school graduation?), and his topic was "Enthusiasm". I still have a business-size card that he handed out with the bullet points for that speech: Make me feel good - I'll produce; The time to worry is before I place the bet; This, too, shall pass; Everything is as good as it seems, Nothing is as bad as it seems.
Charlie always had a positive attitude and a zest for life. He was one of those people who gave credit where credit was due and was grateful and supportive of his staff. Charlie and Mary Lou will always have a place in my heart, and I have so many treasured memories!

Carrie and Scott, please accept my deepest sympathies for the loss of your mom & dad. I knew them when they were here in Minnesota and good friends with my folks, Frank & Eula Coune. (Carrie, your mom bought a set of black & white dishes from me years ago for you.). They all had such good fun with their Cargill gang - hanging out on and around Lake Minnetonka or each others’ houses. I remember both of your folks as kind and fun-loving and know that my parents, who are both gone as well, enjoyed them immensely. They all enjoyed long and productive lives well lived. Condolences, Karen Coune
Dad was full of life and enjoyed be so organized and making sure everything was in the right place and the right time. He loved life to the fullest and lived that way! Will miss his wit and charm and able to tell a good joke. He and Mom where the REAL DEAL and he loved her more than life. 73 year of marriage! Incredible! Miss ya Dad!
I have such great memories of your dad AND mom. There was always a lot of laughter when they were visiting my folks at our house. I’m so sorry about your loss and hope there is some comfort knowing they weren’t apart for long.
Such sweet memories! Nancy Coune
So sorry to hear about Charlie passing away. I enjoyed knowing him. May it help to know that others care.
I had the pleasure of knowing Charlie and Marylou from his leadership with my father at the Arkansas Poultry Federation. They conquered many challenges together. He was a pure joy to be around. He leaves a great legacy in all respects of life. Tom Allen
I still have the picture of you on the floor with Ernie, and Mary Lou with Maggie in her lap. Those dogs loved you... and any ice cube that was dropped. You all and my parents were such great friends, meeting at Bay Point. You fit right in with Daddy's Yo-Hi "kids" and they so enjoyed you. You'll never know how much it meant to my Mother when you and Mary Lou showed up in Lancaster after Daddy died. She really needed you there. I can never thank you enough for your kindness to my mother as she battled cancer. It was like having another set of parents when I would go to Bay Point. If I wasn't at your house by 5pm with the dogs, the phone would ring and you'd remind me I was "late" for Happy Hour. I still miss that.
Charley was a great mentor to me in my Cargill days. He had just been appointed as VP of our poultry plants group back in the early 80s and I was one of his plant managers. He was always supportive of me and helped keep me focused. He will always be in my thoughts, memories and prayers. I remember meeting Mary Lou a couple times and she was such a friendly welcoming lady.
