I was a friend of Charles. I met Charles while I was in under graduate and graduate school at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. I enjoyed being with him and miss him. I was not a very good chess player and he defeated me easily. He was very smart, and always curious about science, and politics. I always enjoyed our conversations and he challenged me to think to think out of the box. Charles was one of the most unique and gifted person I have known.
I was stunned that he left this life so soon. It would have been so

Mike and Charlotte, It has been a long time since we last saw each other. I am Mary Goss Fletcher's daughter. I was able to visit with your mother and Sandy about 4 years ago in Fayetteville. Lucy "Peewee" Goss Whitlow and I took my grandmother Dorothy Goss to visit with your mom. We enjoyed the visit very much with them and it meant so much for my grandmother to see her sister one last time. I just wanted to let you know you are in my prayers at this time.

I'm so sorry to read about Sandy's death. I just got back in town and was catching up on some reading when I saw the article. I don't know when the picture was made but he looks just the same as when we were in high school. I never knew him really well but I always liked him and he was kind to us when I would come over to your house and we would bug him.

I really am sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family are doing well and if you ever get down to this area I would hope you would call or drop in; I'm still at the store most of the time when not traveling.

Charles was a good friend, a great competitor and a very good student. He set the standard for many of us at CHS. He and I discussed Trig and/or Physics numerous times. His letters to the editor(the ones I saw) were very characteristic of him. Our class (1963) has certainly lost an outstanding member.

Dear Mike and Charlotte,

Your brother Charles and I enjoyed a very close friendship during our years together in Conway High School. He was the first truly original thinker that I had ever known; he enjoyed challanging authority and the status quo, which for me was a new and unsettling concept. Even in high school he had rejected religion and had declared himself an atheist - Bertrand Russell was his guru.

Unfortunately, the strength of our friendship was never the same after his brief stint at the University of Denver. In recent years we saw each other occasionally in Fayetteville, but we had taken different paths and no longer had the bond that we had had so many years ago.

In a way ours was a friendship like the one that Hermann Hesse portrayed in his novel "Demian," in which Charles was my Max Demian. I will be forever thankful to him for this gift of independence of thought and action that he gave me.
