Fran Foley
I was saddened to hear of Don's passing.
I came to know Don in 2003 when he participated in the WWII Veterans project that I was doing in Rancho Santa Fe. I was honored to record his WWII experiences which are now at The Library of Congress, The National WWII Museum in New Orleans & the Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society. I will always remember what he told me when I asked him his thoughts as he was coming down the rope ladder from the troop ship into the LSI for the landing at Utah Beach. "I can hear my mother saying Keep your feet dry. Keep your rubbers on". He was in a number of battles including the Battle of the Bulge & received 5 battle stars for his
heroic service. He saw the worst horrors of war & its aftermath in his almost 4 years of service.
I shall remember him as a gentle and thoughtful man & was honored to know him. Our country owes him and all WWII vets a debt we can never repay.
My sincerest sympathy to Eleanor and his family.
