Edward Eugene Gbur Jr.'s Obituary
Edward Eugene Gbur, Jr., age 77, of Springdale, Arkansas, passed away on August 8, 2024, at home. He was born on August 3, 1947, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Edward Eugene Gbur, Sr., and Matilda Filicky Gbur.
Ed graduated from St. Francis College with a BS in Mathematics before earning a Doctorate of Statistics at The Ohio State University. He began his career as an assistant professor at Texas A&M and a public servant for the U.S. Census Bureau. Ed came to the University of Arkansas in 1987, where he taught as a professor of statistics and researched with the Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture and Research & Extension Service until his retirement in 2022. He was active with the American Statistical Association for more than 45 years, becoming a fellow in 2009. He served as an Associate Editor for the Agronomy Journal and was a contributing editor for the Current Index to Statistics for nearly two decades. Ed was an author or co-author on more than 238 peer-reviewed publications. He was highly regarded and respected for his commitment to teaching and to the university community.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Ed volunteered as an official for USA Swimming for more than 20 years. He had a passion for reading, birds, house plants and his dog, Giselle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Matilda Gbur.
Ed is survived by his wife of 17 years and friend of 41 years, Linda Vinson; daughters and sons-in-law, Randi Gbur and Gordon Roman, and Jennifer Gbur and Oliver Smart; brother, Robert Gbur and wife Mary; and nephews, Douglas Gbur, Michael Gbur, and Jeffrey Gbur, and their families.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 19 from 12:00-3:00pm at the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks.
