Harold "Hal" Vincent Carey Jr.'s Obituary
Harold “Hal” Vincent Carey, Jr., 78, of Fayetteville, Arkansas—and formerly of Sarasota, Florida—passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, held by his very close friend, Mike Owings and his wife, and his nephew, Josh Turton. Born on June 30, 1947, Hal lived a life filled with adventure, humor, and deep connections with family and friends.
Hal was predeceased by his beloved mother, Ella Carey Herman; his father, Harold Vincent Carey; and his cousin, Joan Hilbish. His memory is cherished by his extended family and a circle of lifelong, wonderful friends.
He is survived by his cousin, Ellen Carey Sheehan of Meriden, Connecticut, as well as step-siblings from Ella’s marriage to the late John D. Shaw: the late Stewart Shaw and his wife Vicki (deceased); his step-sisters, Sally Shaw of Oregon, Catherine (Cathy) Shaw Turton of Tampa, Florida, and Jan Shaw Smoot of Texas. Hal’s extended family also includes Mike Schultz (Sally); Eva Jean Shaw and her partner, Dina Knight (Stew); Stacey Randolph and her husband Tom (Jan), and their four children; and Cathy’s sons, Jon, Greg, Dan (deceased), and Josh, along with their wives—Kendall, Leanne, Bree Raum, and Amy—and all of their children.
Hal will be fondly remembered for his love of long, meaningful phone conversations and his enthusiasm for both making music and hearing about what music others enjoyed. His passion for beautiful guitars, fondness for the sea, and affection for cars that endured well past their prime were all trademarks of his unique and generous spirit.
He leaves behind an indelible mark on those who knew him—brightening lives with his wit, curiosity, creativity, and steadfast friendship. Hal will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose hearts he touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his memory.
Arrangements are by Nelson-Berna Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
