Harriett Elizabeth Lindsay's Obituary
Harriett Elizabeth Lindsay passed away peacefully with her family by her side, in Fayetteville, AR, on May 23, 2006. She was 92 years old.
Harriett was born on a farm near Belton, Missouri, February 6, 1914. Her mother was a schoolteacher and her dad a farmer. She was the couple's only child and thoroughly enjoyed growing up on the farm with many pets, including her pony, Dolly. Her father drove her 5 miles to school everyday by horse-drawn buggy. For a special treat, her Uncle Ned would let her ride beside him on his dairy truck into Kansas City, and buy her a ticket for a movie matinee.
During her teenage years, the family moved to Emporia, Kansas, in anticipation of her attending the Teachers' College there. But the Great Depression struck and she had to leave college after her freshman year. Instead, she took a job as secretary for the Prudential Insurance Company in Emporia, where she enjoyed working for a number of years and made several life-long friends. A mutual friend in Emporia introduced Harriett to Joe Lindsay, and the two were married May 2, 1942, a union that was to last for over 51 years. The first 8 years of their marriage, Joe was a pilot in the U.S. Air Corps, stationed in Germany for 3 of those years; meanwhile Harriett kept her job at Prudential and lived at home with her parents.
In 1950, Joe quit the Air Corps, and the couple moved to Harrison, AR, a place they had visited and liked in earlier travels, to open "Joe's Bar-B-Que." Word got around town about Harriett's secretarial expertise, and she was hired by Robert S. "Bob" Wheeler to work for him at KHOZ. In 1952, Harriett and Joe's only child, Harriett Ann, was born. A few years later, when Mr. Wheeler started Twin Lakes Television Corporation, Harriett became his office manager in the new office. She loved her job, and held that position for 30 years. She always had a special place in her heart for the many dear friends she made there over the years.
Harriett was always active in the First Presbyterian Church, and also in PTA and Band Boosters during her daughter's school years. In later years, she and Joe doted over their grandchildren, who lived nearby in Fayetteville. She also enjoyed reading and cooking, and is still remembered for her red chocolate "Waldorf Astoria" cake. Her bright smile and the sound of her laughter will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
