Hank is a 1965 graduate of Williams High School in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He graduated in 1969 with a BS in Horticulture from Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. After graduation he joined the Peace Corps where he served in Ecuador from 1969-1971. After returning from the Peace Corps, he became a National Ski Patrol leader at Hidden Valley Ski Area in Lenhartsville, Pennsylvania. He met Jean shortly after, they decided to marry, and he realized he needed a “real job.” He began his foray into the world of horticulture. He was hired as the Superintendent of Twyford Estate in East Islip, New York. A winning monthly horticultural display at the New York Horticulture Society in Manhattan, New York was a responsibility of his job. In 1974, after moving to Oyster Bay, New York, he held the position of Assistant Horticulturist at Planting Fields Arboretum. Following three years in this position, he moved on to Superintendent of Sandy Cay estate in Sands Point, New York. He held this position for 10 years. Later Hank and Jean purchased a home in Oyster Bay, New York. During this time Hank was Director of the School of Horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Throughout his 21 years on Long Island, Hank was active as a lecturer, organizer, and president of various horticulture societies. In 1993, with Jean kicking and screaming, Hank relocated them to Rogers, Arkansas. He transformed a tourist attraction, Blue Spring, into the Eureka Springs Botanical Garden. Later, using his accumulated knowledge and skills, he created the successful business, NorthArkLandDesign.
After retirement, Hank joined the Beaver Lake Fire Department as a volunteer. As a firefighter engineer, his duty was to supply water for fire ground operations. He felt privileged and honored to serve his community.
Hank was a member of Fellowship Bible Church since 1996. He served as a Community Group leader and a captain on the Gatekeeper team. He showed his love for the Lord through his service to his church and his community.
From childhood, Hank’s passion was the outdoors. Although he did have a brief detour into the restoration of exotic cars. His project was a 1964 GT 2+2 Ferrari. Out of all his outdoor interests, skiing rated number one. He was an avid skier, and he and Jean had the privilege of skiing numerous places worldwide. He gave 25 years of dedicated service to the National Ski Patrol. Besides mountains, he loved the water. Living on the water made sailing an obvious choice. Jean and Hank had much fun sailing Wistful and Wistful,Too. From sailing a boat to rowing a boat was next for Hank. He could be found in his one-man shell racing the tugboats on Long Island Sound. As a result he began to compete in ”real races” where he won many medals. Physical fitness was always important to Hank. He had a weekly regimen of weight training and running. He competed in the annual Eliminator race at the Frisco Festival in Rogers where he always placed. Recently he became a part of Rock Steady Boxing as a corner man in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
On that fateful day, while running at Lake Atalanta, the angels arrived to escort Hank home, ending a well-lived life while doing something he loved.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Chapel of Fellowship Bible Church on Thursday, March 24. Visitation 9:30-10:00am; service 10am.
