Steve Graef
John was my PhD advisor at Clemson in the late 1960's. He broadened my thinking about wastewater treatment processes and caused me to see the work as exciting and really worth the effort. He was a demanding professor but endlessly provided me and my fellow graduate students with opportunities to meet the top people in our field and position ourselves for experiences that would help us become experts and or leaders in our knowledge areas. We affectionately referred to him in the Clemson days as the "DR" and we thought of Marge as something like our interested and thoughtful "aunt", aware and concerned about us, our spouses and kids. Beyond graduation he was regularly mailing us copies of relavent articles, suggestions of topics to explore and conferences and committees of which to play a part. Catherine, my wife, and I retain many great memories of visits and activities with John and with John and Marge. We extend our sympathy to Pat, Carol and Laura in this time of loss. John was fortunate to have their care, love and involvement after Marge passed.
