Juanita Maxine Mayes' Obituary
Juanita Maxine Epperson Mayes, age 98, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 2, 2026. She was born on July 10, 1927, in Seminole, Oklahoma, to Rube and Virgie Hightower Epperson. Preceding Maxine in death was her beloved husband of over 74 years, Robert Clyde “Bob” Mayes, and her son, Steven Mayes.
Maxine graduated from Moorehouse High School in Missouri. She later moved with her parents to Prairie Grove, Arkansas, where God led her to meet her sweetheart and future husband, Bob. Together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family. Maxine was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her five sons, faithfully nurturing her family with grace, strength, and a servant’s heart.
She is survived by her children: Bob and Sheila Mayes of Huntsville; Bill and Maeva Mayes of Huntsville; Ben and Sue Mayes of Fayetteville; and Jim and Linda Mayes of Huntsville. She was a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother, leaving behind a legacy of love for family that lives on through her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her grandchildren: Leslie and James Bullard; Billy and Amanda Mayes; Matt and Heather Mayes; Staci and Nathan Bodenstein; Ivan and Kayla Mayes; Iris and Erik Jakobs; Brad and Hope Mayes; Ashley Mayes; Jimmy and Dani Mayes; India Mayes; and Sam and Kara Mayes; along with sixteen cherished great-grandchildren.
Maxine worked for Western Union and later for Fayetteville Public Schools in several roles. More importantly, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, where she volunteered and served others. She loved her family deeply and had a heart for serving people.
She enjoyed working alongside her husband in their fruitful garden and was a loyal and dedicated Arkansas Razorback fan. She took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren grow up and participate in sports, and she had a special gift for offering encouragement, guidance, and wisdom in both sports and life. She was a mentor to many and a kind, hardworking example to all who knew her.
She will be greatly missed by her large and loving family and many dear friends.
A private family service will be held for Maxine. The family appreciates your prayers. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, 20 Dickson Street, Fayetteville, AR, 72701.
