Rick asked me to add this sonnet for Lisa to her tributes. Lisa was once my student and later became my dear friend. She will be missed.
Sonnet for a Hummingbird
Now a Shooting Star
For Lisa - an elegy
By Janis Cantwell
Like a hummingbird, she gathered the nectar of our essences and
mingled us together,
Like a hummingbird - iridescent bright- all nerves and quickness, moving
through her life's route, darting fast as light, exacting, courageous,
At the best of times a reflection of pure joy, the bubble in laughter.
Devoted, loyal and generous to those
she loved, especially her cherished son,
Like a hummingbird she was their fierce defender, a determined foe of those
who redirected her purposes.
Her bright echo came today to my porch feeder -a lovely flicker of color and motion both fragile yet strong -chattered sharply as it dive-bombed an encroacher.
Fast to give, love, offend, defend, forgive, quick in all things
Even in leaving life behind.
Reflection and self-awareness were not
in her nature. She relied on friends
to summarize and project the future of her backlash reactions.
She kept us on our toes
Like a hummingbird, she needed beauty and the ordered life she rarely got,
a born director, wanting all surprises and variations self-originated.
But life is change and not called to our ends but its own.
Our lives will be duller and less luminous.
Like a shooting star that lingers in the heavens for a while,
I pray the echo of our memories may allow us all to conjure
some of her personal magic.
