Marie Eleanor Garvey Fowler's Obituary
Marie Eleanor Garvey Fowler, 79, went to be with her Heavenly Father Thursday, January 10, 2013. She passed away in her sleep, surrounded by her sister, Barbara Garvey Jackson of Fayetteville, and her daughter, Julia Marie Fowler Darley of Atlanta GA. Mrs. Fowler was a long-time resident of Batesville AR.
Marie Fowler was born March 18, 1933 in Normal, IL to Eva Burkhart and Neil Ford Garvey. She received the BFA degree in Art from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and the MFA degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, with additional studies in Botany from the University of Illinois. She taught art for two years at Hood College in Frederick MD.
She is survived by her husband Dr. William Gerald Fowler of the home in Batesville, her daughter Julia Darley and her son-in-law William E. Darley of Atlanta GA, her daughter Barbara Jan Fowler of Little Rock AR, and her sister Barbara Garvey Jackson of Fayetteville.
She was a life-time member of the Herb Society of America. She was the author of "Ten Yards of Black Velvet", a short story published in Southern Living, a children's book Is This an Egg?, and several articles on herbs. Her just completed cookbook is to be published soon.
She was an art major in college and was active in the Art Gallery in Batesville, where some of her works were displayed. For several years she owned and operated The Herb Lady's Greenhouse in Southside, and was well-known for her classes and talks on herbs. She touched so many people's lives with her kind and generous heart, and will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday, January 14, at 2:00 PM. A later graveside service will be held in Buford GA, near Atlanta.
