Mary Lou Wommack's Obituary
Mary Lou Wommack, 78, of Fayetteville, Arkansas passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 24, 2010. She was born in Joplin, Missouri on June 19, 1931 to the Ralph and Clotella Middleton.
She attended the University of Arkansas, where she received her BA in 1974 before attending the Arts Students League in New York. Inspired from becoming immersed in art, she returned to Arkansas to become a professional artist. She quickly gained a loyal following of fans who not only wanted to purchase her original oil paintings but to watch her paint as well. Her ability to inspire others through her artwork quickly became a full-time teaching career. She helped to promote the expansion of art in Arkansas through her artwork and teachings of local artists. She never retired from teaching her art classes, as she cherished teaching too much to ever desire a retirement.
In 2003 she served as honorary chairwoman for the American Heart Association’s Celebrity Luncheon and spokesperson for Washington Regional’s Heart & Vascular Institute. She was a former President and lifetime member of PEO Chapter BH and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She actively supported the advancement and achievement of other artists by serving as President and on the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts while also serving as an active member of the National Portrait Society of America.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Jean Hager and Marlene Sumy and a brother, Kenneth Middleton.
She is survived by her three loving sons; Richard Wommack II, Michael Wommack and Timothy Wommack, two sisters, Carolyn Randall and Jacque Winnie. She was admired by 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was a loving mother, a true friend, a wise teacher, and a respected member of her community. She will be deeply missed by all.
Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. with Lowell Grisham officiating.
