Dr Loren Ray Heiple's Obituary
Dr. Loren Ray Heiple 89, of Fayetteville, died August 2nd at North Hills Life Care & Rehab Center.
He was born April 19, 1918 in Oakwood, Illinois, son of Eldridge and Mary Lucille Heiple. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Judd.
He was Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas @ Fayetteville from 1971 to 1979. He received his PhD in civil engineering from Stanford University in 1967, his Master's degree from Harvard University in 1940 and Bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1939. He joined the U of A faculty as Head of Civil Engineering Department in 1950 and remained in that position until he was named Dean in 1971. He retired in May 1984, following 34 years as a faculty member at the University.
He was a long time member of First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville and a member of the Fayetteville Rotary Club for over 50 years. Dr. Heiple was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theatre. He joined the 306th Civil Affairs Group, in Fayetteville in 1950 and remained in the Army Reserves until 1978 when he retired at the rank of Colonel.
During his academic career he remained active in professional activities. He was a member of the Arkansas Society of Professional Engineers serving as Vice-president and Director and served as the Chairman of the Arkansas-Missouri Section of the American Society for Engineering Education. He was invited to membership in Theta Tau in 1956 and Tau Beta Pi in 1960 and was a longtime member of the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering. In 1966 he was appointed to the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and later reappointed to that Board by then Governor Bill Clinton. One of his favorite hobbies was the annual family tent camping trips, which took the family to most of the states in the country.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie E. Tillman Heiple: son, Tim Heiple and wife Marty of Little Rock: a daughter, Lynne Hill and husband Bob of Springdale: a sister Wilma Frey and her husband Hal of Berkley, California: 5 grandchildren: Justin Cope and wife Maegen, Lindsey and Kyle Cope all of Fayetteville; Drew Heiple and his wife Ashley of St. Louis, Missouri, Emily Heiple of San Francisco, California; one great-grandchild, Loren Austin Cope of Fayetteville, a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of past engineering students and colleagues across the country.
A graveside will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, August 3, 2007, in the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
Memorial services will be at 4:00 PM, Saturday, August 4, 2007, at the First United Presbyterian Church, with The Reverend Norwood V. Brown officiating. The family will be available to meet guests immediately following the services.
