Sylvia and I commuted to Mountainburg together to teach, 1970-72. We kept up with each other for years, going for walks, talking about politics and music and pets. We went to see Million Dollar Quartet together. If you knew Sylvia, you knew how much she adored Elvis! Fond memories. She is missed.
I was bumped from my 4th grade class to make a split class and I went to Mrs.Howard’s class. I met my best friend in that class. I would tell Mrs. Howard stories about my large Italian family. She was so patient with me day after day. One day she told me how much she loves my stories and it made me feel nothing but love from her. She was calm and funny and it only took one look to straighten out the class. She was a jewel in many children’s crowns. I pray for her family and close friends. 🐱 :flag-it: 🦅
I'm just now finding out about Mrs. Howard's passing. She was my 4th grade teacher. I remember how she would always read to us after lunch. I had the honor of not only teaching at Elmdale when I first started teaching, but right along side her as a 4th grade teacher. Our students loved hearing how she was also my teacher! Shevwas absolutely one of the best!
Mrs. Howard was my third grade teacher at Elmdale. She ranked up there in the top three teachers that I ever had. I absolutely loved her. She had a gift of making each child feel very special and made a point of giving us one on one attention. My condolences to her family.
Mrs. Howard was my 4th grade teacher at Elmdale Elementary. She was so loving and caring for her students. She had the prettiest smile & never met a stranger. She loved her cats more than anything! Keeping her family in my prayers.
Bob and I met Tom and Sylvia when we were neighbors on Locust St. in Fayetteville. They lived in the famous “Bertha’s Barracks,” and we lived in “Bertha’s Big House” next door. A good time was had by all. Later, over the years, it was always special to run into Sylvia around town. I loved her sense of irony which she expressed in her quick wit. I shared a class with Silvia at the U of A. I think it was a biology class. One day there were exhibits that we were supposed copy notes from. Like a dumb kid I modified the language on one exhibit and Silvia was copying the wrong information. I fessed up. She didn't get mad. She was calm and her demeanor projected someone who was addressing a small child. She put me in my place with just the right words. I have never forgotten her because of that. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting her, you’ll never forget it. Hundreds of children had the privilege of being her student.
Surely she’s in a comfortable chair, reading, surrounded by all her kitties.

She was kind, encouraging, and helped us expand our minds so that we each knew that our futures couldn’t be limited by our circumstances.
I’ll remember her cat posters in the classroom, her turtleneck and signature bob, and the way she’d gently pick up a stray bug and get them safely outside.
