Sylvia Howard's Obituary
Sylvia Grano Howard passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2023, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born April 26, 1944, in Gainesville, Georgia, the daughter of Charles and Alba (Caporiccio) Grano. Sylvia spent her childhood in Crossett, Arkansas, where she graduated from Crossett High School in 1962.
On June 15, 1971, Sylvia married Tom Howard in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Having met in college through mutual friends, he was the love of her life. Sylvia and Tom celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in June.
Sylvia graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. For the majority of her career, Sylvia taught at Elmdale Elementary in Springdale, Arkansas. During her career, she maintained affiliation with many professional organizations: National Education Association, Arkansas Education Association, Springdale Education Association, and the Parent-Teacher Association. Sylvia is listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers. Because she was a kind and caring teacher, she was loved and adored by her students. Sylvia shared her passion for learning with hundreds of children over her long career.
Sylvia loved animals, especially cats. She rescued and adopted many during her life. From Homer, her first rescue kitty, all the way to Anita Purrl, she loved and spoiled them all. Sylvia was a dedicated supporter of many animal charities. For many years, Sylvia sponsored a class project she named “Christmas for Critters” to benefit the Springdale Animal Shelter. She and her students collected food, blankets, and toys. A special program on AETN highlighted her work to help the community and animals through this project.
Sylvia was an avid reader, swimmer, and traveler. She enjoyed cooking and baking Italian recipes handed down through her family. She also loved music and attending concerts. She liked discussing world affairs and was passionate about politics. Sylvia attended the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton, and throughout the years, she supported and campaigned for many local candidates.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Tom; 2 sisters, Stella Rous of Bakersfield, California; Tish Landers of San Jose, California, and a brother, Jack Grano of Malvern, Arkansas, and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Berna Funeral Home with private services.
