Zane Gene Dewey's Obituary

Zane was born June 6, 1924, to Ed Dewey and Kitty Huffington in Oswego, KS. His birth Mother passed six months later, and he came to be raised by her Sister, Sadie Huffington of Cherryvale, KS. Sadie, or "Auntie" as he, and his family called her and knew her, was his Mother, and the Grandmother to his children.
Zane enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps as a young man in 1943. He trained in Bowling Green, OH and shipped off to San Diego for further training before boarding a troop ship bound for Hawaii, and then the immortal battle on Iwo Jima, the turning point of the War in the Pacific Theater. He kept his recollections of his intense involvement in the Battle, including witnessing the raising of the Flag on Mt. Suribachi to himself for many years, before he spent a day alone and dictated his memories in graphic detail of the horror of War that he witnessed, and his miraculous survival of the combat. These were published a few years ago in the Morning News of N.W. Arkansas. After the Battle, he returned to Hawaii and then was part of the Occupation Force in the remains of Nagasaki, Japan.
Zane returned home and gained a Law Degree from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. He married Susan Elizabeth Hoppe of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1952. This marriage endured for 56 years, and they enjoyed the love of three Sons, two Grand-Daughters and one Great Grand-Daughter. Zane retired after 35 years of service to State Farm Insurance Co. in 1982.
